Born in north wales in 1966, Ian spent part of his childhood in the U.S. and in Australia. Originally a trumpet and bass player,he was a founder member of cult band the sandals. Ian´s unique blend of poetry, film and music has taken him in many different directions over the past 20 years.
"Apart from learning the trumpet from my father as a young boy, I am self taught, encouraged all the way by my family, so i was lucky. I want my work to reflect the world i see, nothing more, nothing less, if sometimes dark then so be it but if i can find some kind of honesty in my work then maybe the light will come to me".
Working and collaborating with many artists incl. leftfield, goldfrapp, pressure drop and director Adam smith. Wheather under his own name, Juryman or with the Wise in Time project, Ian´s use of playfull and sometimes political lyrics have given narrative to heavily produced electronica as well as more acoustic compositions.
work of art
"Like a world traveler in a spiritual craft, Simmonds a factory of a full maritime dimension, rhythmic material lyrical moments, dramatic beat sorcery and orchestral presence without the case of monumental saturation in the network. The single cast and multifaceted- style which are carried exceptionally, demonstrates this swinging acoustic flight of traditional instrumentation paired with modern electric sonic culture. Ian Simmonds does not shy from before an apparent locale in the afro-American music tradition and historical shoots from other musical ways and means. Here stands a perpetual form, a simultaneously synthetic and founded concrete reference. A Mecca for soul brothers and jazz novices, decoded precisely from the tonal spectrum, like the motive British Break Step sense and smooth downbeat island-dom, a classic and soundtrack spot, as well as the depths and straight lines of sounds from Detroit." (Press Kit Musik Krause)
Ian produced under his name severall 12-inches and 3 albums in the past 10 years. From 1999 to 2001 K7! released his works, in 2005 he moved to Musik Krause a sub-label of Freude-am Tanzen (FAT plastics), where he continues his musical legislating.
